Books That Took Forever To Be Made Into Movies

Audiences love to see their favorite stories turned into motion pictures. Waiting for that perfect story to appear on the big screen can seem like agony. Here are a few books that took forever to be made into movies.

A book that has been beloved by both children and adults for the past twenty-six years waited until 2004 to become a film. The Polar Express is the story of a young boy who is whisked away on a holiday adventure to the North Pole. The movie had to expand the story from what was in the children’s picture book, as it would not have enough content for a full movie. They did a wonderful job in capturing the spirit of the book and creating a family favorite around the holidays.

Sense and Sensibility had to wait over one hundred years to hit the big screen. Jane Austen’s novel tells the tale of two sisters struggling to make it in society with their mother after the death of their father. It’s a heartwarming story of love, with betrayal and secrets threatening the happiness of Marianne and Elinor. The 1995 movie does a wonderful job of following the themes, characters and style of Austen’s novel.

Topping the list of movies that took forever to be made is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This series follows the adventure of Frodo and his companions as they struggle to destroy the power of the evil Sauron. Each of these novels have it all; love, action, magic, wonderful scenery, unforgettable characters. Why did it take so long for it to become a movie? Whatever the reason, the finished product was worth the wait. Even though each of the movies had to cut much of the story out, they did so impeccably. The movies are three of the best movies ever made.

So while some of our favorite books take forever to become motion pictures, it can be worth the wait.
